Road safety is a shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians. On average, pedestrians are hit and run over and are responsible for 15% of all traffic accidents, and surprisingly, 40% of fatalities are pedestrians. This article is intended for conscientious drivers looking to improve their driving skills, paying special attention to their interaction with pedestrians and seeking to minimize risks on public roads.

Understanding the Risks

Pedestrians can have unpredictable behaviors, which increases their vulnerability on the road. Common violations include stepping out into the road unexpectedly, crossing improperly, and failing to obey traffic signals. As drivers, we must be alert and prepared to anticipate these potential violations in order to prevent accidents.

Safe Driving Practices

It is crucial to adopt safe driving practices, especially in situations where pedestrians may be at risk. When approaching a zebra crossing, especially if there are vehicles stopped in the other lane, slow down and be prepared to stop. The same applies when passing near stopped buses, as pedestrians may suddenly appear. Drive with caution in areas with a high presence of pedestrians, such as commercial areas, residential areas, bus stops, and near schools.

Consideration for Vulnerable Pedestrians

Pay special attention to pedestrians in vulnerable situations, such as people who are intoxicated, elderly, or disabled. In these cases, it is preferable to allow the pedestrian to act unpredictably than to risk causing an accident. Remember that not all impediments are visible and that there is no obligation to show them. Always slow down and drive carefully in the presence of pedestrians who may have difficulty moving or noticing your vehicle.

Road safety is everyone's job, and as drivers, we have a duty to protect pedestrians by ensuring respectful and attentive driving. By adopting safe practices and maintaining a considerate attitude towards pedestrians, especially those in vulnerable situations, we contribute to creating a safer and more respectful road environment for everyone. With awareness and responsibility at the wheel, we can make a difference on the roads and protect the lives of all road users.
